Strange, isn’t it? You see, the Daily Mail this morning trumpet the story they say they broke about Kolo Toure going to Manchester City and follow it up by claiming AW has confirmed that is the case. To qualify this, they run this quote from the boss: ‘We will see what’s happening in the next 24 hours, nothing is decided yet.
We have seven centre-backs and I am in the position where I have to play some in midfield but of course Kolo is a very good player and we will see what will happen in the next 24 hours.’ So for ‘confirmed’ see ‘nothing decided yet’. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
By the way, Arsene, we may have seven centre-halves but how many are good enough for a title push? But, generally, it is accepted in this morning’s papers that Kolo is on his bike and again the focus turns to those coming in to the Emirates as opposed to those leaving.
The Mail add that Wenger hinted that he will make more signings before the transfer window closes. He said: ‘I am more focused on getting everybody fit for the start of the season but we are looking at opportunities as well. There are still some pre-season games to see what we really need. When the time comes we will do something.’ Clear as mud as ever, AW, keep the f****** guessing is what I say.
Another footballing figure fond of non-committal phrases is Fulham’s Brede Hangeland, who the Sun tell us is a £12million Arsenal target. The redtop explains that he “won’t rush in to committing to Fulham” and he said, you guessed it: “We’ll wait to see what happens.” Bland Hangerland, perhaps. Still, the fact that he has two years left on his contract doesn’t really suggest that his future isn’t at Craven Cottage. Unless AW comes calling, that is. But then that would be eight central defenders.
The same paper claims we have had a £1.5m bid for 17-year-old Brazilian star Zezinho turned down. It reckons: The attacking midfielder’s club Juventude want £3.5m but sources say they might let him go for £2.5m. Zezinho said: “My dream is to play in Europe at a big club.” That’s T******** out the question then.
Talking of whom and better news for those amongst us who would prefer it if Arsenal legend Paddy Vieira didn’t turn out for the N17 feeder club. The Mail tell us: ‘Harry Redknapp admits his bid to sign the Inter Milan midfielder has gone ‘very quiet’. Reports in Italy link the Arsenal legend with Fiorentina.’ Ponder this one Paddy: the enthralling splendour of Florence or the cackhouse that his WHL? So, staying in Italy then…
