Wenger fails in swoop for Cygan

Arsene Wenger’s masterplan to solidify our defence and effecrtively replace Kolo Toure has been scuppered. The answer to our back four woes has been staring AW in the face all summer and the inside word is that he was poised to swoop for the majestic defensive kingpin that is Pascal Cygan.
But the horror movies extra has gone and signed for Spanish second division outfit Cartagena from Villarreal, who offered just over the £250 fee AW had in mind. OK, perhaps I was dreaming. But such is the topsy-turvy, possibly in-possibly out summer of speculation in the papers that I don’t think I’d have done a doubel take if I had read this in the tabloids.
The fact is Cyborg has signed for Cartagena and as you had rightly observed the rest is fiction. Another player not on his way back to N5 is PV33 who has come out and committed his future to Inter Milan, so the Daily Mail tells us.
And another former player in the news is Johnny Hartson, who, heartwarmingly, has spoken about his battle with cancer. He tells the Sun that he will fight on and has so much to live for. How about we make him guest of hnour for the home match against Celtic if he is well enough? Keep battling on Johnny like you used to for the rip-roaring Reds.
Back to the Mail and the international scene crosses the Arsenal radar with the paper claiming England Godfather Fabio Capello has dismissed the idea off Manuel Almunia playing for the Three Lions. Hmm. I suppose the small mater of him being Spanish has put off the Italian boss of bosses!
Still on international duty, young Guns Nacer Barazite and Jack Wilshere featured in the Under-21 Holland-England match last night and some of the papers predict Our Jack is a serious contender for the World Cup sqaud for 2010.
Elsewhere the only (possibly) viable tale of new faces at the Emirates involves reports that chief executive Ivan Gazidis was in Germany with £12m on his hip as Arsenal trail Borussia Dortmund’s Serb defender Neven Subotic, 20.
Ho hum. Gird your loins for Goodison, chums. Saturday beckons.
