Weekly Loan Report: January 30-February 5

The Loan Report

Chuba Akpom // Sint-Truidense V.V.

The 22-year-old English forward made his debut as a second-half substitute in STVV’s 0-2 loss to KV Kortrijk. He made little impact as STVV struggled to salvage the match, though he did display some nice first touches in his 15 minutes of action.

Takuma Asano // VfB Stuttgart

The Japanese international did not make the matchday squad as Stuttgart drew 1-1 with VfL Wolfsburg. The departure of Hannes Wolf and subsequent hiring of Turkish manager Tayfun Korkut may lead to diminished minutes for Asano. He will need to impress during training if he wishes to establish himself in the first-team.

Krystian Bielik // Walsall F.C.

The young Polish center back, only just into his loan move with Walsall, picked up a slight injury that kept him out for their match against MK Dons. Walsall manager Jon Whitney in a press conference remarked that he was unwilling to risk the young loanee since his abilities will be needed for the remainder of the season.

Marc Bola // Bristol Rovers F.C.

The 20-year-old left back played 90 minutes as Bristol Rovers suffered a last-minute winner in a 1-2 loss to Shrewsbury Town. Bola played well as an attacking fullback, linking possession well but lacking the end product to force Shrewsbury to defend the width of the pitch. His recent performances have obviously impressed Darrell Clarke as he has been preferred over Lee Brown of late.

Cohen Bramall // Birmingham City F.C.

The 21-year-old left back came on as a 33rd-minute substitute as Birmingham City claimed a needed 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Bramall was lucky to avoid being sent off as Marco Matias was sent off for alleged violent conduct against the loanee in the first half. Replays seem to suggest that Bramall may have instigated the incident but the referee deemed the Owls man’s action worthy of a red card. With Jonathan Grounds suffering a potential knee injury, the door is open for Bramall to claim first-team minutes.

Joel Campbell // Real Betis

The Costa Rican international has increased his individual training but has not yet joined the first team. Quique Setien did not give a timeline for his return to first team training but he did indicate it could be soon.

Carl Jenkinson // Birmingham City F.C.

Despite strong performances in the FA Cup, Jenkinson did not make the matchday squad for either Championship match this week for Birmingham City. Obviously, Steve Cotterill wants to reintroduce him into the first-team slowly to avoid any potential injury aggravations. Whether he can claim minutes before the end of the season is unknown.

Emiliano Martinez // Getafe C.F.

The Argentinian goalkeeper was an unused substitute as Getafe drew 0-0 with Leganes. With Vicente Guaita deciding to stay with the Azulones, Martinez will likely struggle to see the first-team action.

Stephy Mavididi // Charlton Athletic F.C.

The 19-year-old suffered a serious hamstring injury in Charlton’s weekend match against Oxford United, with the blow likely keeping him out for 2 months. The injury comes at a bad time for the prodigious talent as he has been impressive in the early days of his loan. Whether he can return by the end of the season is still unknown and we’ll be watching closely hoping he can make a quick comeback.

Tafari Moore // Wycombe Wanderers F.C.

The 20-year-old right back played 90 minutes as Wycombe claimed a crucial 3-2 win over Luton Town. Moore continued his recent good form with the Chairboys, getting forward and acting as a solid distributional outlet when Wycombe moved into the final third. The right-back has impressed of late for his new club and looks to be their first team right back until the end of the season.

Kelechi Nwakali // MVV Maastricht

The young Nigerian played 73 minutes as MVV agonizingly fell 0-1 to Jong PSV. Nwakali was forced to defend for most of the game as PSV II dominated possession for most of the match. When they were able to push forward, he did have several nice first touches into space to release other attackers as they pushed into the final third.

Lucas Perez // Deportivo La Coruna

The Spanish forward played 90 minutes as Deportivo La Coruna continued their slump in a 0-5 defeat to Real Sociedad. Lucas was poor throughout the drubbing as Real Sociedad dominated the match with 63% possession. With only 19 touches throughout the contest, Lucas was isolated as the lone forward with most of the team defending deep in a low block. If this recent slide continues, it is possible the Spanish club is relegated to the second division.

Julio Pleguezuelo // Gimnastic de Tarragona

The 21-year-old Spanish center back played 90 minutes as Nastic drew 0-0 with Cadiz C.F. Pleguezuelo struggled in his first match for the second division Spanish club. He struggled with positioning on direct balls to the back line, losing several headers that put the defense under pressure. Cadiz nearly scored the winning goal late in the 2nd half on the blind side run behind Pleguezuelo to only be saved by a scuffed shot. Hopefully, these early moments will not be indicative of things to come.

Jeff Reine-Adelaide // Angers SCO

The 20-year-old French midfielder did not make the matchday squad as Angers SCO fell 1-2 to Montpellier HSC.

Ben Sheaf // Stevenage F.C.

The 20-year-old English midfielder did not make the matchday squad as Stevenage fell 2-3 to Accrington Stanley. He is close to returning to first-team action after suffering a slight hamstring injury last week.
