Two issues beggar belief this morning as we survey the Arsenal landscape after the transfer window closed last night. The first is that AW didn’t get a top keeper in to replace MA1 or to a lesser degree Lucasz Fabianksi.
The manager has had all summer to find his man but it came down to Mark Schwarzer being unable to make the switch from Fulham because of an injury to David Stockdale. To my mind that isn’t good enough. He should have had a long list of keepers as targets and cherry-picked the best one during the summer and be done with it.
But the second issue for me is a even more worrying. That Arsenal fans can call for the head of AW just because of this lack of transfer activity is appalling. Let’s not go over everything the man has done for the club nor should we forget that under his stewardship we haven’t had our hands on a prize since Paddy V. slotted home the pen that won us the FA Cup final in 2005.
Instead, let’s see how this season unfolds. Perhaps MA1 can raise his game. We know he is a good shot -stopper and it is his decision-making at set pieces and corners that more often than not comes under scrutiny. If he can improve that – and the suggestion is that he has after his performance against Blackburn last week – then he may well do a job.
But here’s the rub. If he can’t and we lose out on a trophy because of him (or indeed Fabianski) then AW would have to publicly defend his position and there is every chance that this would become untenable in the wake of another potless season. For as much as we are admired for playing the beautiful game, we would be admired more if we had an end product. Witness Barcelona.
For the time being though we should back AW and the players who wear the famous red and white. Following a team requires a certain amount of blind faith. We have enough detractors without turning on our own kind for heaven’s sake. Get behind the Arsenal and support the cause. And let’s hear no more of ‘Wenger out’…for now.
And don’t forget that if the day does come when he is relived of his position, Europe’s elite clubs would beat a path to his door to beg for his services. Think about that. COYG!
