FC Barcelona are interested in signing Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang if reports are to be believed.
According to Sky Sports News, the Catalan giants, who announced over the weekend they are now well over €1.3bn in debt, are keen on adding the Gabon international to their ranks ahead of next season.
But there’s a catch. Due to their immense financial problems, Barcelona can’t offer Arsenal an actual fee for Aubameyang. Meaning that Philippe Coutinho is on offer as leverage for the Gunners.
With the north London side chasing both Martin Odegaard and James Maddison, it is highly unlikely that the proposal of Coutinho will be accepted.
But the discussion does raise an interesting question. Who could Arsenal realistically take from Barcelona in exchange for a player that would improve Mikel Arteta’s squad?
Right-back is slowly becoming a huge problem area for Arsenal.
Hector Bellerin and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are yet to be moved on for good. Whilst Calum Chambers and Cedric Soares are solid players but are both lacking the extra quality to fully cement themselves as the number one choice in the position.
But at Barcelona, the Catalan side boasts not one, but two defenders who could make the right-back position their own. But the one we will be focusing on is Sergino Dest.
The USA international surpassed expectations last season for Barca. And the youngster established himself as the club’s top right-sided fullback in the squad. And for Arsenal, Dest could be the long-term solution for the position at the cost of Aubameyang.
Another huge winner from Barcelona’s last season was the astronomical rise of midfielder Ilaix Moriba.
Whilst Pedri was the star of the show for the Catalan side, he is one of the few players the La Liga giants just wouldn’t allow to leave no matter the price.
But for Moriba, the teenager, whose future with Barcelona is up in the air, could be an option for Arsenal. And just like Dest, the youngster has the quality and talent to establish himself in the first team.
With Arsenal finding a gem in Albert Sambi Lokonga, Moriba could be another promising central midfielder who could form an excellent partnership with the Belgian international for the Gunners.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen
Easily the most unrealistic name on this list, it’s almost easy to forget just how good a goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen can be when in form.
The former Borussia Monchengladbach star at one point looked ready to overtake Manuel Neuer at international level for Germany. Only for the Bayern Munich star to regain his illustrious form and for Ter Stegen to stagnate somewhat with Barcelona.
Yet that doesn’t mean he would be a poor addition for Arsenal.
With Bernd Leno’s future up in the air, replacing him with his international teammate could be an incredible bit of business from the Gunners if Aubameyang was to go the other way.
