FTK Blog: Nearly a Gunner Sebastian Squillaci Profile

The latest addition to the Arsenal squad will be this 30yr old centre back who currently plays for Sevilla. Following increasing speculation, Arsenalinsider’s sources finally confirmed that the deal has been confirmed by someone very close to the club and it is subject to the usual clearance and medical and agreement of personal terms, but we are certain that this 6ft 1in player is destined to become the latest transfer to the Emirates. We are more confident than with the deal with Joe Cole which was hijacked by Liverpool after the World Cup despite a pre contract deal.
He is a typical Wenger signing in the latest trend of centre backs in that he is athletic, has excellent heading ability but is not very tall. His career took off at AS Monaco under Didier Deschamps and since then he has acquired 20 caps for the French national side. Squillaci then moved to Olympique Lyonnais where he became part of a winning centre back combination as Lyon won the French League. He joined Sevilla for 6.5 million Euros in 2008 and this week the fee is reported to have risen to 8 million euros subject to appearances.

This is what French National Sports newspaper L’Equipe had to say about the imminent transfer today

“Looking for a capable frame to accompany Laurent Koscielny, Thomas Vermaelen and Johan Djourou,  Arsenal is about to employ the services of this experienced French international central defender,  Sébastien Squillaci, according to information of the team. His arrival in Andalusia in 2008, Sevilla, The defender wasn’t  selected for the Champions League Qualifier on Wednesday evening for the match against Portugese side Braga (0-1). At  30 Years of age, the former player of Monaco and Lyon should sign a three year contract with the club led by Arsčne Wenger off within hours.

“The footballer asked us not to play him (against Braga) due to the offer of a large team but, for now, we consider that this is an inadequate offer and Squillaci remains a Seville player,” said Ramon Rodriguez “Monchi”, the Sports Director of Football of Seville, to  journalists after the match.
