Will Arsene Wenger find time to finalise a new deal for Bill Gallas before the transfer window? The way he has been playing alongside Tommy Vermaelen I certainly hope so.
Gallas is out of contract in the summer and is free to talk to interested clubs come January and leave on a free transfer in the summer. Our former skipper is 33 next August and in the past AW has been reluctant to give players in their thirties anything longer than a two-year extentsion at most. I still rue the day he wouldn’t give Bobby Pires a longer deal.
AW has stated that talks are ongoing but that could mean anything to be blunt. It is fair to say Gallas has overcome a difficult period to forge an impressive partnership Tommy Gunner and as we are hardly flush with centre-halves it would surely make sense to give Gallas what he wants.
After all, this will probably be Gallas’s last contract in football and we could hardly blame him if he looked at a move abroad for one last pay day. Both AC Milan and Inter Milan were linked with Gallas when he appeared on the brink of quitting after losing the captaincy last year, while he has in the past hinted at a return to France.
If he can’t secure Gallas’s services, it is said that AW has already identified Borussia Dortmund centre-half Neven Subotic as a long-term replacement. He is said to have been tracking Subotic since he joined Mainz as a teenager and he has impressed at Dortmund, where he has signed a new deal until 2014.
Trouble is we are not alone in liking what we see. It is said that Manchester City, Manchester United, Inter and Juventus are also said to be keeping tabs on the 20-year-old, who would cost at least £15million.
Press speculation suggests AW sees the 6ft 4in Serbia defender as an ideal target but, additionally, it is reported that it is unlikely any move will take place in January as Dortmund would be unwilling to sell during the season. Gallas has earned a new, improved deal in my opinion. Don’t be stubborn AW – give him what he wants and let’s crack on.
