Happy St Thomas Day...celebrate 21st anniversary of Anfield glory

Happy St Thomas Day to one and all. I can’t quite believe it is 21 years since Michael Thomas charged through the midfield to score the goal that brought the title to Highbury at Fortress Anfield against a Liverpool side cock sure the crown was heading for their trophy cabinet.
I was lucky enough to be there that night and without doubt it is the greatest moment of my life in terms of watching and following the Arsenal. Possibly. I got there as they kicked-off after a nine-hour drive from Bognor because of the traffic and didn’t have a ticket. I tried to bunk in when I saw a door open in the Main Stand and ended up walking into their police control room.
The Old Bill told me to go and watch it in the Arkles. Sod that. I got in after 20 minutes with a spare ticket from one of the lads on the coaches who all got there late because of the massive congestion on the M6…the rest, as they say, is history. I’d welcome your memories of that night if you were there or elsewhere.
Okay, allow me to bring you up to speed with this morning’s tabloid tittle-tattle and the story doing the rounds this morning is the one we brought you yesterday on this site that reveals Cesc Fabregas’ dad has pleaded with Arsenal to let his son return to Barcelona.
There is no real update on this but what is new is that Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo reckons his side have pulled off a transfer coup by clinching the signing of Fran Merida. The Spaniard is set to sign a five-year deal with Atletico and Cerezo reckons Merida is the business: ‘He is a magnificent young player with a fine future. This transfer hasn’t always been easy, but he has always been interested in our project and has now made the next step by leaving Arsenal.’ With Fabregas on his way, should we have done more to keep him, one wonders?
Other tales doing the rounds are that we are still interested in Palermo’s £10m-rated defender Simon Kjaer and Dinamo Kiev’s Senegalese central defender Pape Diakhate and the rumour that AW is also considering a move for Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer continues to do the rounds and AZ Alkmaar’s Sergio Romero and Shakhtar Donetsk keeper Andriy Pyatov are still, apparently, on his radar. I’d be happy with Schwarzer in the absence of anyone else that’s for sure.
Anyway…’it’s Thomas charging through the midfield…’
