This summer proves to be one of the most important transfer windows in a while for Arsenal.
So the latest reports that AS Roma are stepping up their interest in Ozan Kokcu is worrying.
According to Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho’s side are keen on the Feyenoord star. The Gunners have been keen on the Turkish attacker for over a year and have even held video meetings with the 20-year-old.
But, it seems as they could miss out on the player altogether in a frustrating sense of deja vu. Aston Villa managed to beat the north Londoners to the signing of Emiliano Buendia in a devastating loss to Mikel Arteta.
The Midlanders were said to have outbid Arsenal for the Argentine attacker. He was thought to be a key target for the side in what was a bitter loss.
And now they risk losing out on yet another target. Couple that with the imminent departure of Granit Xhaka, and it’s a horrible start to the transfer window.
Meanwhile, Martin Odegaard is reportedly priced at €60m (£51.6m) – yet another transfer target which seems worlds away.
This is a key time for the Emirates Stadium giants, who are looking to rebuild after last season’s disaster.
As well as finishing eighth and outside the European places, Arteta’s men failed to win the Europa League. Doing so would’ve allowed them to qualify for the Champions League, but, they failed to defeat Unai Emery.
Missing out on two targets due to a lack of urgency from the hierarchy at the club is incompetency of the highest order.
Arsenal need to be proactive in the transfer window. It’s a shame to miss out on targets, however, and when clubs like Roma and Aston Villa are beating you to signings, questions need to be asked.
