Opinion: Granit Xhaka's impending transfer to Roma will leave a gaping hole in midfield

The latest reports about Granit Xhaka and a possible transfer to AS Roma seem to be hotting up by the day.

Yesterday, it was revealed by Gianluca Di Marzio, that the Italian outfit were in talks over a move for the 92-cap Switzerland international. It was said that the Serie A side wanted to pay £10m plus bonuses, whereas the Gunners were demanding closer to €25m (£21.5m) for the midfielder.

However, the transfer for Xhaka to Roma seems to have accelerated overnight. The latest updates claim the Giallirossi are confident of completing a move for the star.

There’s no two ways of putting this, the move is incredibly disastrous for the Gunners. Mikel Arteta has built his current side around the former Basel man.

His absence during the second-leg draw to Villarreal earlier in the month showed off how crucial he is.

Alongside Thomas Partey, the duo shines and complement each other’s skillset.

The Ghanaian knows he can dribble forward with the assurance of cover behind him. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old knows he always has the option of a forward pass in the African player.

It seems strange that there is such saddness over the ace’s departure from the Emirates Stadium. Not too long ago, he became public enemy number one after his antics during his substitution against Crystal Palace.

His revival has been quite something and after his inclusion in the CIES Premier League team of the year for 2020/2021, it’s not a stretch to say he’s Arsenal’s player of the campaign.

Amid the crisis of this season, losing our best midfielder would really compound the misery.

Xhaka may not have enjoyed the best of times in years gone by, but, his influence now is unquestionable. His seemingly impending departure will leave a gaping hole in the team’s midfield for next year.
