Star-spangled Gunners set for world tour...possibly

So, which far flung destinations would you prefer for the first Gunners Go Global tour? Thailand? Qatar? LA? The Big Apple? It seems it can’t be too long before AW accepts that the club must undertake a summer tour to ‘promote the brand’ and compete with our rivals who jet all over the shop to spread the word. Star-spangled Arsenal fest anyone?
Last night at the AGM, AW conceded that he is under pressure to jet off to various exotic spots rather than play Barnet then have another tour of Austria with assorted low-key friendly matches in between. The benefits are obvious: there is big financial incentives on offer from sponsors eager to see the giants of the ‘EPL’ on their turf and associated with their products. And commercially, of course, it makes sense if we are to open up new revenue strands from overseas markets. How long before we he have club shops in Beijing, Bombay and the Bahamas?
AW said: “I am under pressure from the club to do it. But i want to start the season well. If it’s just to make money then no. If for other reasons, then maybe yes. We are examining it, but not in a year when the Euros or World Cup years. International players, under FIFA rules, must have four weeks’ holiday.”
So job done, we’ll be on the road next summer probably. I might start swerving some of the more mundane domestic away days to save my cash for the world your. Won’t be too hard to miss visits to the Reebok and the DW Stadium for starters.
My personal favourites would be to see Arsenal in the Cuban capital, Havana, with a trip to the 150,000-capacity Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea (although the away section is pretty small, see pic), followed by a game in the floating stadium in Marina Bay Singapore. That should do it. Mind you, will be between a rock and a hard place when we travel to Braga for the CL game against the Portuguese outfit we smashed 6-0 at the Ems.
