The Insider's View: Arsenal and Arteta handed blow after Dest rejects interest

Arsenal have been rejected by Barcelona defender Sergino Dest in what is a hammer blow to Mikel Arteta.

What’s the story?

According to Sport, the American has turned down interest from three clubs.

Borussia Dortmund, AS Monaco and the Gunners all, registered their keenness in signing the 20-year-old. However, Dest seems hell-bent on making the grade at the Camp Nou, reiterating his desire to stay in Catalonia.

The defender only joined the Catalan giants last summer in a £23.4m deal from Ajax. And he was a crucial member of Ronald Koeman’s first team last term, playing 44 times across all competitions.

But, reports earlier in the month claimed the Spanish outfit wanted to sell the defender amidst a financial crisis.

Arsenal and Arteta handed hammer blow after Dest rejected the club

Arsenal, and Mikel Arteta especially, have been handed a hammer blow after Dest rejected the club.

Arteta has implemented a passing style of play, which involves having defenders who are comfortable on the ball. The Arsenal boss prefers to have his right-back slot on the inside as opposed to sticking to the touchline in a more inside-right position.

It’s part of the reason why Hector Bellerin is being allowed to leave the club. The Spain international is far from comfortable in possession often stuttering on the ball.

He also gets caught out of position far too often, as seen during Tottenham’s 2-0 win back in December.

However, the same can’t be said for Dest, who would’ve suited Arteta’s side far more than the 25-year-old.

Whilst Bellerin completed just over 83% of his passes in the Premier League last season, Dest completed 90%.

The Dutch-born figure would’ve been perfect, however, now the club must search for another right-back to replace Bellerin.
