The Insider's View: Breaking transfer record to sign Maddison would be worth it for Arsenal

It looks like Arsenal will need to break their transfer record to sign Leicester City’s James Maddison.

According to Leicester Mercury, a move for the England international will cost more than their move for Nicolas Pepe.

The Ivorian cost the Gunners a whopping £72m during the summer of 2019.

His transfer broke the side’s previous record move of £56m for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

And on the face of it, both those moves seemed to have worked out fairly well.

The Gabon international has scored 85 times in 148 games for the Gunners. Whilst Pepe scored five times in three games towards the end of last season, picking up after a slow start to life in N5.

Maddison is the number 10 Arsenal desperately need

And in Maddison, Arsenal have the perfect number 10 to fill the void.

Martin Odegaard returned to Real Madrid following his loan spell.

However, you can argue the Englishman is an upgrade on the Norwegian.

As well as being able to spot a pass, Maddison has a keen eye for goal having scored 11 times last season.

Some of his strikes were fairly outrageous, including his long-range effort in the away victory versus Manchester City.

But, it’s his passing that attracts the Gunners.

Maddison played more key passes per Premier League game last season than any Arsenal player.

Arsenal need to complete a deal

On the face of it, the deal may be expensive, but, it’s a worthwhile move for Arsenal.

At 24-years-old, Maddison has plenty of years left at top-level football. Mix that with his outstanding quality and Arsenal will be laughing for whatever fee they sign him for.
