It has been reported today that Wenger is on the verge of signing a new deal said to be worth £75,000 a week. It is reported that an official announcement will be posted on the Arsenal.com within 24 hours.
The 57-year-old Frenchman is out of contract next summer and rumours had been circulating that he could be on his way out of the Emirates at the end of the current season following the departure of vice-chairman David Dein and the sale of Thierry Henry to Barcelona.
But Wenger, who has brought unprecedented success to the club in his decade in charge, had been keen to stress that the continued speculation regarding his contract issue would not distract him from the job of leading the Gunners to further glory.
It remains to be seen what will develop regarding the proposed takeover bid of American billionaire Stan Kroenke and whether Dein, a close friend of Wenger, returns to the club, but Wenger is reported to have finally reached an agreement with the current board.
Wenger said last month: “It is true it is a gamble I take – but when I take a gamble at some stage, it is with people who are in charge. They tell me certain things, and I believe or not, then I says ‘listen, I want to sign only one year’.
“It is down to me if I want a longer contract or not and there is a takeover, because I know from the moment I sign it could happen.”
