According to Manchester Evening News, former Arsenal defender Joseph Olowu is currently on trial at Manchester United.
The young defender joined the Gunners’ academy when he was just eight years old. A lot was expected of Olowu in his early teens, but he never quite fulfilled his potential by the time he reached the age where he had to break into the first team.
After two loan spells at Cork City and Wealdstone, Arsenal decided against extending his contract. He was released last month and he has been a free agent since. However, the Gunners could soon regret that decision.
Olowu could join Manchester United after Arsenal release
The report claims that Olowu has been given a chance by the Red Devils to impress. He is currently on trial at United and was even given a start for their under-23s in their 2-2 friendly draw against Kidderminster Harriers yesterday.
The 21-year-old played for 57 minutes and United didn’t concede in that period. That seems to have impressed the chiefs at Old Trafford, and the report claims that they are considering signing Olowu to bolster their defensive options at youth level.
That could come back to bite Arsenal. Yes, Olowu is nowhere near good enough for the Premier League at the moment, but we’ve seen in the past that centre-halves take more time than attackers to develop, and the 21-year-old could well fall into that category in the coming years.
