Arsenal booked their place in the semi-final of the Europa League after a sensational win over Slavia Prague last night. Next up, it’s Unai Emery’s Villarreal.
The Spaniard spent 18 months at the Emirates before facing the sack. He led us to a Europa League final in his first season with us, but sadly, we fell at the final hurdle against Chelsea.
Arsenal didn’t quite recover from that defeat in the following season. We had a shocking few months – both in the Premier League and in the Europa League – and that cost Emery his job.
After a while on the sidelines, Emery returned to management at Villarreal and he is doing a fine job there. His side, unlike Arsenal, are yet to lose a game in the Europa League this term, and we have a real tough test on our hands.
Villarreal breezed past Dinamo Zagreb night. The former Arsenal boss was, predictably, delighted with his side, and he took to Twitter to send a message to his fans after the game.
He wrote: “We continue to enjoy the journey and with a clear feeling: The illusion of a whole people! FORWARD!”
That had nothing to do with Arsenal, but Gooners being Gooners decided to respond to the tweet.
Surprisingly, most of the messages to Emery were positive, which is really good to see. Things just didn’t work out for the Spaniard at Arsenal, but he always conducted himself well, and he has been really professional since leaving as well.
Emery will be extremely motivated to beat the club that sacked him. His tweet shows that he is ready for battle, and so are Arsenal fans ahead of the semi-final in two weeks time.
