Arsene Wenger divides opinion even to this day. However, the one thing most Arsenal fans will still thank him for is for signing Thierry Henry.
What a player he was! The legendary Frenchman joined us in the summer of 1999 as a winger from Juventus. Wenger forced him to play down the middle and that changed everything.
Henry went on to become arguably our greatest ever striker. He scored more goals than any other Arsenal player in history and helped us win two Premier League titles – one of which made us invincible.
Five-and-a-half years after he left us, Henry returned to the Emirates on a short-term loan deal. Not a lot was expected of him, but as he did for years, he delivered on his first game back.
On this day nine years ago, Henry scored a trademark winner against Leeds United in the FA Cup. The goal is undoubtedly not his best, but it was certainly a special one.
“He may be cast in bronze, but he is still capable of producing truly golden moments,” said Jon Champion in commentary. That still echoes in our heads and we will probably never forget it.
Arsenal tweeted out a picture of Henry on his return and fans went wild. The Frenchman is still many people’s favourite ever player and the messages many of them sent to ‘The King’ is a joy to read.
