'What a maverick': Some Arsenal fans want Emery signing to replace Aubameyang as captain

It has been extremely hard to pick positives out of Arsenal’s games in the Premier League. Just four wins in 12 games and only one victory since the start of November is not a good look for a team aiming to be among the top four.

The pressure is mounting on Mikel Arteta’s shoulders. The Arsenal boss hasn’t experienced anything of this sort in his managerial career so far, but he has to find a way to get his side back to winning ways, and that has to happen soon.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal drought has been one of the hottest topics of the season. The Arsenal skipper has scored just twice in the league this term, and his lack of goals is attracting questions about his leadership as well.

Do Arsenal need a new captain?

Arsenal’s latest defeat to Burnley gave rise to the same questions. Is Auba the right leader to take this team forward? Is the burden of captaincy affecting his goalscoring form?

Gunners supporters think Arteta needs to give the armband to someone else, and many have identified a new skipper.

One of Unai Emery’s final signings, Kieran Tierney, is undoubtedly a fan favourite. He is one of the few players who have been performing well this season, and his interview after last night’s defeat gained him more plaudits.

He said, as per The Mirror: “Every game there are signs we are doing a bit better but it is still not good enough. At half time we need to be going in the lead but we are not doing that.”

“Hard work is the only thing [that can fix this], nothing else for it. There are no excuses. There is nothing I can say that will make people believe a positive thing is going to come out of this. We are lucky we have a great manager. We just need to show better on the pitch.”

Tierney’s rallying call seems extremely genuine. His body language on the pitch is that of leader and many fans feel that he is the captain that this team needs at this moment in time.

Here’s how a few Arsenal fans reacted to his comments
