Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta seems to have ruled out an exit for Shkodran Mustafi this month.
The German has been given just 43 minutes of action in the Premier League this season. He has less than six months left on his contract and this transfer window will be Arsenal’s last chance of making any many through his sale.
However, it now looks like he is going nowhere. Arteta claimed in his press conference that Mustafi is still in contention and revealed that it will be Sokratis Papastathopoulos leaving the club this month and not the German.
He told Football London: “His future right now is here. Trying to help. We have Papa that probably is going to leave the club this window, we have William that has already gone on loan. So we don’t have that many right now. Gabi has been out for a period, David has been injured, so the situation is completely different to before.”
“Musti came back from a really difficult injury when he got injured at the end of last season. After that period he was doing really well. I think his performances were increasing and getting better and better. And when he came back that’s when we had seven or eight central defenders. So he had to get his performance level up.”
“And now it’s about, yeah, when do you make the next step to be the starter? And the reality is that we have to change that for different reasons, use different personnel. He’s been very close in a few games. But now we’ve found as well a partnership that is giving us clean sheets, and sometimes when you do that it’s difficult to change. But he’s still in contention.”
Arsenal fans are baffled by Arteta’s comments
Arteta has claimed over and over again that Arsenal have a massive squad. We need to get players out to bring new ones in and potential money we get from sales this month will give us a massive boost in our pursuit of a new number 10.
Arsenal will have Pablo Mari, Rob Holding, Calum Chambers, Gabriel Magalhaes and David Luiz if Mustafi and Sokratis leave. Kieran Tierney can also slot in at centre-half which should be enough cover for the next six months.
Arteta’s comments have shocked a number of Arsenal fans.
