Mikel Arteta must splash out £40million for the services of midfielder Dani Ceballos in the summer to make his loan deal from Real Madrid a permanent one.
That’s according to Arsenal fans we spoke to in a poll to establish whether or not the Gunners head coach should retain the services of the Galactico once — and if — the current season reaches its conclusion.
Reports doing the rounds today suggest that Arteta has been told by the bosses at the Bernabeu he will have to hand over a fee said to be between £36million and £40million to complete a deal.
Ceballos became a fans’ favourite almost instantaneously when he burst on to the Gunners scene after signing for former head coach Unai Emery last summer. But after an impressive start to his career in north London, he suffered an injury and then struggled to get back in after Arteta was handed the job.
Arteta came in to replace Emery at the end of last year and immediately set about restoring some pride in the players and the way they went about their business on the pitch. And before long Ceballos had earned his place back in the starting eleven and his performances have left supporters certain that he should be signed to play a part in the 2020/21 campaign.
Ben Bryder, a season ticket holder from West Sussex, says Ceballos has more in his locker and is still developing as a player and he would benefit hugely from Arteta’s tutelage. He added:
“We could spend weeks and months trying to track down a new midfielder but to my mind we have the right guy in place now. Ceballos is only 23 for heaven’s sake — he is still developing and Arteta has a certain way to play and we have seen already that Ceballos can fit in to that directive. We should sign him permanently in the summer and let’s face it, in today’s market place £40million is very reasonable.”
Lifelong supporter Lonnie Allen says Ceballos should be signed but that his midfielder partner Granit Xhaka should be replaced. He said:
“Xhaka has done well to recover from the episode when he fell out of love with us Gooners and stormed off the pitch and threw his shirt down. But that isn’t enough and he should be sent packing in my estimation. Ceballos is a much better midfield prospect and we should certainly secure him from the loan spell to a more permanent move.”
Gooner Eric Barnes, from London, said Ceballos should be snaffled but that he would allow Xhaka to stay and part company with Mattéo Guendouzi. He added:
“Dani is superb and a much better player that he is given credit for. I’d offload Guendouzi, though, as I just don’t think he has what it takes for the game at the very top level.”
