Arsenal claimed on their official website today that Dani Ceballos has returned to full training after recovering from his calf injury.
The Real Madrid man missed each of our last five games in all competitions. Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey are arguably Mikel Arteta’s number one choice in midfield, but Ceballos is more effective against teams who sit deep.
The report on Arsenal’s website claims that Ceballos’ availability will be assessed ahead of tonight’s game. However, the Spaniard has decided to declare himself fit on his own.
That is a huge boost for us. Ceballos is Arsenal’s only available box-to-box midfielder other than Xhaka and Partey.
Elneny can’t do what the Spaniard does, while Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard are more attack-minded.
Ceballos’ return now gives Arteta the opportunity to rest someone like Xhaka.
The Swiss international has played every minute of every Premier League game since Boxing Day. That clearly is too much, especially in a period where there are games every three days.
If Ceballos is fully fit as he has claimed, he should be brought back into the side alongside Partey tonight.
Wolves tend to sit deep and play on the counter-attack. The Spaniard’s creativity could help us unlock their well-drilled defence, and Arteta should count on him to produce the goods to help us maintain our unbeaten run.
