According to The Athletic, Brighton and Hove Albion star and Arsenal target Tariq Lamptey will miss the rest of this season after undergoing surgery over the weekend.

The young Englishman hobbled off injured against Fulham in mid-December and hasn’t featured in the league since.

Brighton’s medical staff tried to get him ready without surgery, but after almost three months, they were left with no choice and he had to go under the knife.

The report claims that Lamptey will get back on the training pitch before the end of the season but there is no way he will be ready to play any part in Brighton’s final 11 games of this campaign.

Lamptey has been a star ever since he joined Brighton. His incredible pace has caused a lot of trouble to a number of sides, and his name is on the wish list of plenty of clubs including Arsenal.

Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that Arsenal were seriously looking at Lamptey. (Read here) He claims that a decision will be made about a potential move soon, but his injury now could change everything.

Big blow or a chance to get him for cheap?

There is no doubt about the fact that a fully fit Lamptey would be a quality addition to any top side.

It was reported recently that Brighton would demand a fee in the region of £30 million (read here) for him and not one person felt it was too high. That tells you all you need to know about Lamptey’s quality.

However, his injury could make a few clubs reconsider now. Lamptey has missed 18 games already since joining Brighton and it looks like he will now miss plenty more before this season ends.

That makes him a big risk for clubs, especially when they are spending about £30 million to sign him.

On the flip side, a few clubs could use this injury to negotiate a deal for a fee far less than the reported £30 million that Brighton are demanding. The Seagulls are unlikely to budge, but this is the only way a club can bring down that asking price.

It will be interesting to see what Arsenal do this summer. We will need a new right-back if Hector Bellerin leaves the club and there are very few options on the market that are better than Lamptey.

His injury certainly complicates things but Arsenal have shown in the past that we aren’t afraid to gamble. Kieran Tierney came in with a long-term problem and he has now proved to be one of our best signings in recent years.

Lamptey could well do the same, but it is still a big risk.
