Arteta says 21-year-old Arsenal ace has really impressed him in pre-season training

Arsenal completed the signing of Nuno Tavares 10 days ago and the 21-year-old seems to have impressed Mikel Arteta already.

The Gunners entered this summer’s transfer window with a new left-back high on Arteta’s wish list. Kieran Tierney is our undisputed number one and that won’t change, but the Scotsman’s injury problems hurt us last season.

Cedric Soares and Granit Xhaka had to deputise for Tierney at left-back on multiple occasions. Both players did fairly well, but we lacked the right balance without KT, and that had to be addressed.

Arsenal, surprisingly, solved that problem very early in the window. A deal for Tavares was sorted out quickly and the 21-year-old introduced himself to Gooners with a fantastic goal against Rangers on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta: Nuno Tavares has impressed in training

Arteta was asked about Tavares today and the Arsenal boss heaped praise on our scouting team for identifying him. He claimed that the young left-back has been pretty impressive in pre-season training already, which is good news ahead of the new season.

He told Arsenal.com: “We wanted to have more strength and specific qualities in the left-back position, and we identified Nuno a while ago.

“To be fair to the scouting department, they have done brilliantly to identify a talent with the qualities that we required, at the age we required and financially it was something we can afford.

“The boy has already been pretty impressive. I think he is the right profile for what we are trying to build here.”

Tavares isn’t expected to feature regularly next season, but he is certainly a welcome arrival. Arteta will no longer have to overly rely on Tierney and the Scotsman will now get all the rest he needs to keep injuries as far away from him as possible.
