Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was quizzed about Bukayo Saka’s incredible form after the teenager scored yet another goal last night.
The Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw by Benfica in the first-leg in Rome. Emile Smith Rowe conceded what looked a really harsh penalty, and the Portuguese giants took the lead from the spot.
Saka wasted little time before slotting the ball into the back of the net, and that proved to be a hugely important away goal for us. Arteta was full of praise and claimed that the teenager was in the best form since he took over 14 months ago.
Arteta said, as per Arsenal.com: “I think he’s in a great moment, he’s full of confidence. He’s been really important in recent results. His form is probably the highest that it’s been since I’ve been here and he’s been really consistent.
“He needs to keep going and (we need to) be wise with him because at the moment he’s a big part of the team.
“It is (difficult managing his workload) at the moment because he’s been a real threat. He’s involved in a lot of goals all the time and his consistent performances make him a starter obviously. So it’s a fine balance, but at the same time he’s 19 years old and we have to protect him.”
Arsenal Insider’s view:
Last night’s goal means Saka has scored six times and has provided five assists in all competitions already this season. He looks like our best player and the scary thing for our opponents is that he will only get better.
Labelled as ‘amazing’, ‘intelligent’ and ‘smart’ by former boss Unai Emery (Football London), Saka has never looked better in his career. He has really nailed down that right-wing spot, and it looks like that will end up being his best position.
Arteta needs to be careful about burning him out. However, with how good he has been since Christmas, there is absolutely no way the Arsenal boss can afford to leave him out of the side.
