Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was quizzed about competition for places in his side ahead of the game against Benfica tomorrow.
The Gunners boss has always maintained that players who deserve a chance will be picked on matchday. He is proven it plenty of times as well, and it won’t be a surprise to see him do the same again this season.
Arteta was asked about the competition at right-back between Hector Bellerin and Cedric Soares.
The Arsenal boss admitted that the Portuguese international has been playing well, but he surprisingly claimed that Calum Chambers is training really well and is now completely ready to step in at right-back.
He said, as per Arsenal.com: “I think everybody has to compete with each other. I think Cedric has done really well.
“We’ve got Calum now that has been training really well in the last three to four weeks as well and looks completely ready to step in. So, everybody has to play at their best level and we’re going to have to rotate players as well with the amount of games that we have.”
Calum Chambers at right-back?
We all know Chambers can do a job at right-back if required, but his best position is arguably in the heart of the defence. However, it is brilliant to have him fully ready now after over a year of struggles.
The former Southampton man has had a torrid time under Arteta. He suffered a horrific injury in his first game under the Spaniard and has played just three times in all competitions since Arteta has been at the helm.
It is unlikely that Chambers will be given a start against Benfica tomorrow, but he might get a chance in the league soon.
We might just have to go all out in the Europa League, and that means players who haven’t played regularly will be given a good run of games in the Premier League. That would be brilliant for Chambers who has the quality to deliver at the top level.
