Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta sang praises of Nicolas Pepe in his press conference yesterday.

The Ivorian has had his fair share of problems this season. Arteta preferred Willian over him earlier in the campaign, and when Pepe was finally given his chance against Leeds United, he blew it by getting himself a silly red card.

The Arsenal boss was furious after that game and many felt that Pepe’s career was in the balance. Arteta handed him just two starts in the next seven league games which raised further doubts over his faith in the Ivorian.

However, Pepe is beginning to prove people wrong. He has started each of our last three league games and has scored twice. Arteta admitted that he has been a real threat, and revealed that the Ivorian put the work in after he was dropped instead of sulking like many others would’ve done in his position.

He said, as per Arsenal.com: “Even when we made decisions not to play him, he kept working hard. He has improved in a lot of areas and has been much more consistent for 90 minutes.

“He’s a threat at the moment because he’s been scoring goals, he’s been assisting players, he’s been a real threat. He needs to continue doing that.”

Pepe deserves a ton of praise

After his red card at Elland Road earlier in the season, Arteta publicly claimed that Pepe had let the whole team down. He labelled his actions unacceptable, and it was later revealed that the Ivorian was fined.

That could easily have caused a rift between player and manager, but it didn’t. Arteta barely used Pepe in the league for a few games, but that didn’t cause any problems either.

The Arsenal boss was clearly impressed by that and Pepe is reaping his rewards now. The former Lille man is proving a number of people wrong and if he can maintain the same kind of form until the end of the season, he will silence all his doubters.
