Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was delighted with his side’s display against Leicester City yesterday.
The Gunners started the game slowly and conceded a very sloppy goal after just six minutes. Everyone feared the worst at that point, but the players showed incredible character to come back and win 3-1.
Arteta faced the media after the game and he claimed that four senior Arsenal players were brilliant against the Foxes.
He said, as per Arsenal.com: “He (Willian) was really good. We’ve seen that in training the last few weeks. He’s rebuilding himself and he’s not accepted the situation. I think he was the player who changed the game against Benfica in the last few moments when he came on, and today I think he was terrific.
“The same with the other senior players. Laca, I think the way he played, Nico grew in the game and had a big impact as well.
“Granit as well. A player who has played that many minutes, to play with the heart and the passion he showed in every action, I think it’s a great example for the rest of the players.”
Arsenal Insider’s view:
Willian is definitely showing signs of the player we all thought he would be when he joined us last summer. He looks a lot more interested and the things he’s trying to do are finally coming off.
As for Pepe, many felt that Arteta was really unfair when he dropped him a few weeks ago. His confidence could have easily been shattered but he stayed strong, started yesterday, scored and was one of our best players on the pitch.
Xhaka deserves immense praise. The Swiss international is always unfairly criticised by some fans, pundits and the media, but he never backs down from a challenge. He always comes back stronger and his performances since Boxing Day have been absolutely phenomenal.
Arsenal fans and Arteta will be hoping that all four can continue performing at the highest level until the end of the season. If they, and everyone else, reach the heights they’re capable of, we will end this campaign positively.
