Arsenal look for win against Swansea to keep their league campaign on track

Arsenal turn their attention back to the Premier League having survived a scare in midweek. Their extra time win in the League Cup shouldn’t affect the side too much however as 11 changes to the starting line up are expected. Swansea are the visitors on Saturday afternoon and have won in three of their last five trips to Arsenal. Last season was a 3-2 win for the home side with Theo Walcott bagging a brace. Arsenal have lost just one in their last six league games and could go into the top four with a win. Swansea could drop into the bottom three having won one in five league games and sit just one point above.
Manchester United host Tottenham in the lunchtime kickoff on Saturday as they look to come back from their first league defeat of the season last week. They face tough competition in Spurs who are unbeaten on the road this season. They have, however, only beaten United seven times in Premier League history. Last season saw Tottenham win one of those seven as they beat United 2-1 at White Hart Lane. On the other hand, United have not conceded at Old Trafford against Spurs since 2014. Tottenham have won four straight league game but were dumped out of the League Cup in midweek while United progressed. Both sides are level on points heading into this game so if there is to be a winner they will take a big advantage into the rest of the season.
Chelsea travel to Bournemouth aiming to put in a more convincing performance than they have recently. Last weeks win over Watford was not without its problems given that they were behind for parts of the game. They face a Bournemouth side who have won only once at home this season and have not beaten Chelsea since 2015. Both games last season saw the Blues put three past the opposing goalkeeper as they coasted to victory. A win could see Chelsea close the gap to 3rd, especially with the two sides above playing each other.
Manchester City have impressed so far this season and seem comfortable at the top of the league. They are yet to lose so far and have won eight of nine league games this season. They were, however, held to a goalless draw for the first time in the midweek league cup tie. They travel to West Brom who have not beaten Cory since 2008. In fact, Manchester City have won each league game between the two sides since 2011. West Brom at on a poor run of form and the pressure is starting to build as they have not won a game since August. Manchester City have scored on average more than 3.5 goals per game in the league, whereas West Brom have scored just three in their last five.
Liverpool’s one win in five league games has seen them fall to 9th in the table, just a point ahead of their next opponent Huddersfield. Huddersfield ended their winless run last time out with a 2-1 win over Man United. They don’t score many goals at the moment though and, while much is made of Liverpool’s defensive frailties, they have conceded just once at home so far in the league.
Watford have only beaten Stoke once in the Premier League and have lost the last three meetings. Stoke face a more difficult task this week though as Watford are experiencing some of the best form they have had in a while. Only Chelsea and Man City have beaten them so far this season and they currently sit in 6th place. Stoke, on the other hand, have won only twice this season and both were at home. They are currently conceding more than two goals a game, but that could be skewed due to the seven Man City scores a few weeks back.
Crystal Palace have not beaten West Ham at home since 2013 and if they fail to do so this weekend they could fall further into relegation danger. With just one win so far this season Palace have really struggled and failed to pick up a point or even score in the other eight games. West Ham are also not experiencing the best of starts as they currently sit a point above the bottom three. A poor performance last week against Brighton was a missed opportunity and failure to get anything in this game could put them further under pressure.
Brighton and Southampton have the same record over the last three games, one win, one draw and one defeat. A low scoring start to the season has seen Southampton take 12 points from their opening nine fixtures. Their hosts Brighton are just one point further back and could overtake with a win this week. Many expected Brighton to struggle this season and they did at the start. They have now turned a corner and, although it is a long season still, need to build on their current momentum and put points on the board.
Leicester and Everton meet on Sunday having both recently fired their manager. Leicester have now hired Claude Puel to take charge and try to lift them after a difficult start. Everton have only lost to Leicester three times in the Premier League and two of those occurred on the Foxes title-winning season. The away side won this fixture last season by a 2-0 scoreline at the King Power Stadium. Leicester’s season was starting to show signs of recovery recently as they are unbeaten in three, but they remain in 14th and still in danger. Everton are fairing worse than that though and are currently in 18th after not winning in three games.
The final game this week is Newcastle’s Monday night visit to Burnley. Both games were draws the last time these two sides met in the league. After good starts the two clubs find themselves in 8th and 7th places. Burnley have won only once in their last five, while Newcastle have lost just once in their last five games.
Last weekends win was the perfect response to the Watford defeat and prevented any further poor form. Swansea are struggling this season but have proved difficult for teams to break down, Arsenal will not be granted as much space as Everton gave up. A win is still needed in this game so that Arsenal can maintain touching distance of the clubs above and put them under some pressure before the fixtures get tougher.
