Bernd Leno has had his say on the type of player Arsenal need to bring in this summer to succeed at the top level.
The Gunners have had a shocking season in the Premier League. We are currently 10th in the table, 12 points behind fourth-place Chelsea.
There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that we need to strengthen the squad heavily this summer.
Mikel Arteta and Edu have a lot to think about ahead of the transfer window, and Leno has offered the pair some advice about the kind of player they should be looking to bring in.
The German told SportBild, as translated by The Mirror: “We have to be a nastier team. We all get on well, but we are often too nice on the pitch. Perhaps we are missing a proper ankle-biter, someone who can take out opponents in games.”
The Insider’s View:
This brings back memories of people calling Arsenal a ‘soft team’ every season after we faced Stoke City away, doesn’t it?
Leno may just have a point here though. We can agree or disagree about the part where he claims that Arsenal are too nice on the pitch, but his comments about the need for a nasty player, especially in the middle of the park to break our opponents’ build-up, is spot on.
Granit Xhaka certainly has a nasty side in him, but that has to be used in a smart way. He does that at times, but there are other occasions where he loses his head and costs the team by getting himself sent off.
A proper defensive midfielder who knows when to show his nasty side is exactly what Arsenal need. A younger version of Fernandinho, who Arteta knows very well, would be ideal for us, but there aren’t really too many players like him on the market, are there?
