Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang spoke to BT Sport after helping his side get past Benfica last night.
The former Dortmund man was in the spotlight before the game. He missed three chances in the first-leg that he would have usually scored, and he received a ton of stick from pundits and the media.
The pressure of playing at the top-level is hard enough, but starting a game knowing that your side may well get knocked out because you missed easy chances last time makes it a lot more difficult.
Auba was asked about his misses from the first-leg and he admitted that he was thinking about it pre-game.
He said: “Everyone is happy tonight. Definitely, I had this in my head, but this is what gives me power every day, to take the error from the past and transform it to strength.
“Tonight I’m really happy that we won the game.”
Arsenal Insider’s view
After Benfica scored their second goal last night, it did look like we were going to get knocked out. Aubameyang could have easily sulked and underperformed, but he rose to the occasion and won us the game.
The Arsenal skipper has had a very difficult season – both on and off the pitch. Criticism from everywhere since his misses last week wouldn’t have been nice to receive, but he stayed mentally strong and that has made him come out stronger.
Auba finished last season incredibly and that helped us win the FA Cup. If he can do the same again this season, we might get our hands on the Europa League title, and that would arguably become his biggest achievement as our skipper.
