Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli sat down for an interview with ESPN Brasil where he was asked about the player he looks up to the most at the club.

Martinelli joined us from the fourth-tier of Brazilian football at the start of last season and set the stage on fire. He was incredible for us in all competitions, but sadly, an injury kept him away from the side.

The teenager spent months looking on from the sidelines. He saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have a spectacular season last term, and Martinelli decided then that the Gabon star is the player he wants to emulate at Arsenal.

He claimed that he wants to go on and become Arsenal’s skipper and also potentially take over the number 14 shirt – an iconic symbol at the club thanks to king Thierry Henry.

Martinelli said: “I try to work every day, hard. Of course, Auba is an incredible player and person, a pleasure to have him on the team. He’s a guy who plays in my position. I look at him every day and try to learn as much as possible.

“Of course, I hope, in the very near future, to be able to assume the position, following in his footsteps, who is the captain of the team, wears shirt 14, which is a symbol of the club”

Gabi is the heir to Auba’s throne

Aubameyang is one of the best strikers in world football and has been for a few years now. He is a massive player for us, but when he decides to step down, Martinelli will be the one who will have to take over.

The teenager came in and smashed 10 goals and provided four assists in just 15 starts in his debut campaign. He will only get better and Arsenal fans will be praying that he stays far away from injuries.

If Martinelli can remain fit, he can become one of the best players in the world. Arsenal’s future is truly bright and so is Brazil’s, who have an incredible player on their hands ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
