Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka was quizzed about his partnership with Thomas Partey in the middle of the park.

The duo looked incredible in the few games that they have played together. Xhaka and Partey complement each other very well, and it looked like that was Mikel Arteta’s preferred central midfield pairing.

Sadly, Partey has had terrible luck with injuries this season. He has missed a ton of games already and Xhaka has admitted that it is a shame that he hasn’t been able to play more games alongside the Ghanaian.

He told Arsenal.com: “It is a shame we have not played a lot together, because he has had two big injuries. But the games we have played together, I think he looks very good, very solid.

“We are very good together, not only on the pitch but off it as well. He is a lovely guy, he is improving our team because you can see how much experience he has at this level, and this is good for my game as well.”

“As well, the other midfielders in the team are improving step by step and the important thing is that we can see and we can feel we are improving and we have to keep going like this and let’s see what we can take from the end of the season.”

Arsenal Insider’s view:

There is absolutely no doubt that a Partey-Xhaka midfield pivot is Arteta’s preferred option.

The Swiss international can sit back and protect the backline when Partey drives forward and vice-versa. That makes them an excellent pairing in the middle of our park, but sadly, we’ve only seen it a handful of times.

Arteta confirmed yesterday that Partey is very close to returning from his injury. There is a good chance that he may feature against Benfica later today, and that really is a massive boost ahead of what is a must-win game.
