Ozil reveals ambition to deliver trophies for Arsenal

Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil has revealed he is ready to man up at Arsenal to make an impression on the Premier League.

Arsenal’s new club-record signing says he is eagerly anticipating the challenges ahead with Arsene Wenger’s side.

German international Ozil, 24, met the media after training with his new team-mates for the first time after his £42.5million move from Real Madrid.

And he said: “I look forward to playing in this league – I watched so many Premier League games. Of course, its very physical, it’s a man’s sport, and I want to prove myself in England. I also played in Bundesliga and Spain and proved myself.”

Ozil has told how the trust in which Wenger placed in the playmaker convinced him to move to north London from the Spanish capital.

He added: “The most important thing was what the manager thinks about me and what his plan for me is. I decided to come to Arsenal because I have the trust and familiar environment here.

“I would have come here without a fee. The most important is that the manager trusts me, that’s the crucial point. I’ve talked about this in the past, I didn’t get the respect and trust  and it was a bit difficult.

“When I spoke to Arsene Wenger on the phone I felt the respect. I need the respect. I don’t want to talk about Real Madrid, that topic is over. I will have many years here.

“I’m not disappointed because I’m at Arsenal, one of the biggest clubs in the world. I had a very good time in Madrid and I had friends there and good moments. You could see from their reaction that they didn’t understand the move. But you have to look ahead. I’m in the strongest league in the world and I have to continue developing. They didn’t have to say a lot about the club. I know how successful they have been, players like Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabrgeas. Many young players came here and got to become one of the best players in the world.” Ozil admits he consulted his Germany team-mates ahead of his switch and that he is looking forward to life in London.

He continued: “The city is very nice and you can see how familiar this club is. When I arrived everything was great, the boss is great and everyone is very cordial. He will improve me and I’m very happy to be part of this team.

“I couldn’t really think a lot about Arsenal because I had to focus on Germany but I asked Per Mertesacker and Lukas Poldolski about it. I was curious and I look forward to it. The young players develop well here and this one of the reasons I came here. I’m really happy to be here under such a great manager.”

“We want to play offensive football and to keep clean sheets. We can’t promise to win trophies but I will promise to give all to win trophies.”

And Ozil says he is gunning for the top flight title. He added: “Of course, we can challenge for Premier League title. I know the team and what talent we have here. Everyone wants to be successful, this one of the biggest clubs ins the world. It will be difficult because it’s one of the strongest leagues in the world.”
