'They asked': Bruno Guimaraes confirms interest from Arsenal this summer

Lyon and Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has had his say on rumours linking him with a move to Arsenal this summer.

Reports from about a month ago claimed that the Gunners view him as an alternative to Manuel Locatelli, who was our number one target then. A move for the Italian was always unlikely as he had his heart set on joining Juventus.

Guimaraes was viewed as a perfect option and Edu has been keeping an eye on him for a long time. However, Granit Xhaka decided to stay at Arsenal and our pursuit of a new central midfielder ended then and there.

Bruno Guimaraes: Arsenal spoke to my agent

Guimaraes was asked about Arsenal’s interest in an interview and the midfielder admitted that there were talks over the summer. He claims he didn’t want to move, but has opened the door for a transfer in the future by stating that he dreams of playing in England.

He told Globo Esporte: “There were polls with my agent. But nothing official, they (Arsenal) asked… well, there was no official proposal. My goal, and I made it clear to Juninho, is to win a title here. Lyon fans are lacking in titles, they haven’t won something for a long time.

“We have the Cup, the Europa League, the French Championship, which is very difficult due to Paris’ level, but it’s a league, anything can happen. My goal is to achieve something, make a name for myself at Lyon, but I have never hidden that I have a strong desire to play in the Premier League.”

The Insider’s View:

A new central midfielder was a priority for Arsenal going into the window as it looked certain that Xhaka would be joining Roma. However, that deal collapsed, and the Gunners decided to extend his contract.

Arsenal no longer need a new midfielder, but Xhaka isn’t getting any younger. He is 29 already and if a bid comes in next summer, Edu will surely look to move him on, even though he just signed a new deal.

That could make us revive our interest in Guimaraes, who would be a fantastic addition. He is excellent with the ball, is brilliant with his positioning and another year in Lyon will only help him become an even better player.

There’s no way Arsenal will sign Guimaraes in this window, but he could well be an option this time next year.
