Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette spoke to BT Sport after their coverage of our win over Leicester City yesterday.
The Gunners conceded very early and every Arsenal fan feared the worst. Mikel Arteta’s men, however, showed incredible character, and we managed to get in front before the break.
Nicolas Pepe scored our third goal seven minutes into the second half and that put the game to bed. It was good to see the senior stars stepping up after weeks of being overshadowed by the performances of the likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.
Heavily criticised Arsenal stars Willian and Nicolas Pepe were both excellent last night, as was Lacazette, who led the line well and converted his penalty brilliantly.
The Frenchman was asked about the senior players being overshadowed by the youngsters. He claimed that the experienced stars should stop relying on the likes of Saka and Smith Rowe even though they’ve done incredibly well over the last two months.
He said: “I think it’s important that everyone plays well. Recently, we talk a lot about the youngsters who play really, really well for the team but as well, the senior players need to be ready, to be good. We don’t have to rely only on the youngsters. When everyone is focused and good, it’s easier for Arsenal.”
Arsenal Insider’s view
The senior players finally stepping up to the plate is brilliant news for Arsenal and Arteta.
Willian is finally showing signs of improvement. The Brazilian surprised everyone with his performance when he came on against Benfica, and his display last night was arguably even better than what it was on Thursday.
Arteta will be hoping that Willian and all the senior players can keep this up. That will only push everyone to be at their absolute best, which would be brilliant for us ahead of what is a very important period of the season.
