Arsenal fans have reacted with anger after the Gunners were dumped out of the EFL Cup 2-0 by Southampton at the Emirates Stadium last night. Pre match who would have given such odds on that result and if you now fancy a flutter on this weekends match against West Ham what better way than to have a look at our matchbook vs betfair review.

As to last night’s match manager Arsene Wenger, who is no stranger to coming under fire from irate supporters during his 20 years in north London, has come out to try to explain just why a gutless Arsenal couldn’t force their way through to the semi-final and keep their chances of a trip to Wembley for the final alive.

The hapless Gunners didn’t have a single shot on goal during the first half and were second best throughout the 90 minutes when it came to endeavour, industry and guile.

They huffed and puffed and created chances in the second half but the performance was disjointed and was summed up when, midway through the second half and with the crowd growing increasingly frustrated, Aaron Ramsey held his arms up in disbelief when he couldn’t find a willing recipient for a pass.

In the side Wenger put out last night, Ramsey is seen as an experienced player but for him to show frustration rather than encouragement was typical of a lacklustre, limp display. It was a performance, their first defeat in 20 outings, that furious supporters vehemently castigated on social media.

Wenger did his best to offer an explanation to the derisory fare on offer to 60,000 paying followers but the jury is out on whether or not his words will appease his detractors.

He said:

“It’s not only a disappointing night because we are out, but it’s a disappointing night because the performance was disappointing. I question our urgency level, our focus from the start.”

“It was not good enough and we paid for that. Overall, I think that is most disappointing. It can happen that you go out of the competition, but our first 45 minutes were just not good enough and not at the level of required concentration. In the second half we responded well, but overall for me, that’s the most disappointing.”

Arsenal raised their game somewhat after the break but it was a case of all too little too late as the Saints deservedly went through to the semi-finals where they will face Liverpool.

Wenger added:

“I said at half-time that what we did there was not Arsenal. It’s not the way you can stay in the competition and that we want a different response.”

“I think it was there, but overall it’s very disappointing and I must say, Southampton deserved to qualify and well done to them. They were ready from the start on and we were not.”
