The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) Football Observatory have released their Premier League Team Of The Season, and one Arsenal player has surprisingly made the cut.

The Gunners have had a woeful campaign in the English top-flight. We’ve ended the season in eighth place – our worst finish in over 25 years.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Most Arsenal players have had a really disappointing campaign. If you had told an Arsenal fan that one player would make the team of the season, their guess would either be Bukayo Saka or Emile Smith Rowe.

Well, get ready to be surprised.

Granit Xhaka named in the Team Of The Season

CIES have included Arsenal star Granit Xhaka in their Team Of The Season. The Swiss international has had a decent season, but nothing really to shout about. However, the Observatory has seen something in him that most others haven’t.

They claim that the players were picked based on their performance index, which is calculated by considering pitch production and efficiency at both individual and collective level throughout the season.

According to that very index, Xhaka has had a better campaign than every other midfielder in the Premier League, and that should silence a few of his doubters – well, we hope it does.

Xhaka may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but he is our most important player. We’ve seen how poor Arsenal are without him in the side, and that could potentially be one of the biggest reasons why he has been included in the team of the season.

There have been rumours floating around about the Swiss international potentially leaving the club this summer. That would be a humongous blow for the Gunners, especially as it will cost a fortune to bring in someone who would be better than Xhaka in areas where the former Basel man is the king.

Keeping hold of him for another season may well be the best thing for all parties involved. However, if Arsenal bring in someone like Yves Bissouma, it’s hard to imagine how Xhaka would fit in the team, especially as we will not rotate a lot thanks to no midweek European action next season.
