Lucas Torreira’s agent Pablo Bentancur spoke to Calcio Mercato about his client’s future at Arsenal.
Rumours have flooded in recently that the Uruguayan is unsettled and Unai Emery is at the centre of it. Torreira has been given a more advanced role at Arsenal which has reportedly made him uncomfortable.
The 23-year-old was one of Arsenal’s best players last season and the sudden change in his role is strange. Naturally a defensive midfielder, Torreira has been playing as a number eight and is at times Arsenal’s most advanced midfielder.
Bentancur, who has been in contact with the midfielder, explained that his client isn’t happy with the situation. He also claimed that multiple foreign clubs have taken an interest in Torreira but a change in January is unlikely.
Torreira’s agent said: “I must say that the change of role has penalized him sharply. He is no longer at ease and we hope that things can change. We have no problem with Arsenal but only words of thanks. Arsenal has allowed Lucas to compete in the Premier League, he has always shown great confidence.”
“Clearly the interests for Torreira are all right, especially by Spanish clubs, but I never sat with any club to talk about his transfer, because of the great respect we have for the Gunners and its general manager Raul Sanllhei,” he said.
Losing Torreira would be disastrous
Arsenal cannot afford to lose a player of Torreira’s quality. The Uruguayan is one of a kind and his addition last season filled the void that was vacant for a long time. With Xhaka possibly leaving soon, losing Torreira will be a horrible blow and it will cost us a humungous amount of money to replace the duo.
With Arsenal struggling defensively, Torreira is our best option to shield the backline. His ability to win the ball back quickly and to pick out a player from deep is invaluable. Arsenal fans will be hoping that Emery resolves the issue soon and puts a stop on the unwanted speculation.
