Alan Shearer says Mikel Arteta has completely 'rejuvenated' third-choice Arsenal star

Alan Shearer released his team of the week on Premier League’s official website after the latest round of games.

The Newcastle legend included two Arsenal players after their brilliant individual performances against West Ham United in the 3-3 draw on Sunday – Martin Odegaard and Calum Chambers.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Odegaard was our driving force. He made everything happen in the final third and Arsenal fans are absolutely delighted with how well he has settled in since joining us from Real Madrid in the January transfer window.

Chambers, on the other hand, surprised everyone.

The Englishman suffered a terrible injury last season and that kept him out of action for about a year. Most people mainly view him as a centre-half and rightly so as his style of play and his physical stature suit him more to a role in the heart of our defence.

Mikel Arteta, however, used him at right-back against Burnley a few weeks ago and against West Ham on Sunday, and Chambers was absolutely fantastic against the Irons at the Olympic Stadium.

Heavily involved in our first two goals, the Englishman had a solid game and Shearer believes that Arteta has completely ‘rejuvenated’ him.

He said: “Claimed an assist and forced an own goal with two superb right-wing crosses. The defender has been rejuvenated by Mikel Arteta.”

Arsenal Insider’s view:

Chambers may be our third-choice right-back behind Hector Bellerin and Cedric Soares, but the Englishman – in his last two games – has offered much more than our two natural right full-backs have since the start of the season.

His willingness to constantly overlap the right-winger opens up a lot of space to exploit and his crossing – as we saw on Sunday – is arguably better than both Cedric and Bellerin’s.

With Bellerin heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer, many feel that Arsenal need to invest in a top-quality right full-back.

If Chambers can stay fit and keep his form up, he might well save Arsenal millions, which would be brilliant as we are unlikely to have a lot of money to spend in the upcoming summer transfer window.
