'Arsenal scouts were sleeping': Chris Sutton slams Gunners' failure to sign 'unbelievable' star

Chris Sutton thinks ‘Arsenal scouts were sleeping’ when West Ham United signed Tomas Soucek on a permanent deal in the summer.

The Czech international has arguably been the signing of the season. He has been West Ham’s best player and his work in their midfield has helped them climb up to fourth in the Premier League table – 11 points above Arsenal.

Sutton has claimed that Arsenal fans would have absolutely loved Soucek at the Emirates. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be.

He said on BBC’s Monday Night Club: “Would Arsenal fans like Soucek in their midfield right now? Of course they would.

“David Moyes and West Ham had a better eye than every other Premier League club – and the Arsenal scouts were sleeping. That’s a fact.”

Arsenal Insider’s view:

It is very easy for pundits now to say ‘this player would’ve done well at that club’. Not one person tipped the Gunners or any other big side to sign Soucek in the summer, and it was a common opinion that Thomas Partey was the better signing.

The Ghanaian has barely played this season while the West Ham man has been one of the best players in the Premier League. Sutton’s opinion is understandable now, but people would’ve laughed at him if he had suggested this in the summer.

More importantly, it would’ve been very difficult for Mikel Arteta to fit Soucek in at Arsenal. His style suits West Ham, but nobody knows how good or bad he would be at a club that dominates possession and demands mobility and incredible technical quality in the middle of the park.

Labelled an ‘unbelievable’ player by Declan Rice recently, Soucek might end up at a big club very soon. However, it will be a real surprise if Arsenal make a move for him, especially under Arteta.
