Arsenal fans have been excited about the prospect of signing Martin Odegaard on loan this month. The Norwegian is desperate for regular game time and the chances of that happening in Madrid is next to zero.
Edu and Mikel Arteta are on the market looking for a new number 10. Mesut Ozil is out of the door and it would be foolish to rely completely on young Emile Smith Rowe until the end of the season.
Odegaard would be an incredible addition. There is no way Real Madrid would let him leave permanently and our financial constraints make this loan deal the best possible option this month.
However, it’s never done until the fat lady sings. We have been heavily linked with plenty of players in the past and fans have been left disappointed at the end of the transfer window when a deal fails to materialise.
Sky Sports revealed the news yesterday and they contacted Spanish journalist Alvaro Montero today for more details about the same. His comments may just fill Arsenal fans with some confidence.
Odegaard to Arsenal is a ‘huge possibility‘
He said on Sky Sports: “It’s a possibility. As far as I know, there are many clubs in Spain and all around Europe. We are talking about Ajax who are interested, and many clubs in Germany. In Spain, Real Sociedad and Sevilla, and also Arsenal is a possibility.”
“As far as I know, there’s one club above everyone – Real Sociedad – where the kid played last year, and it’s a huge possibility. But now Real Madrid have a new offer, it’s from Arsenal, and after Mesut Ozil left it’s a huge possibility for him to go there.”
“He’s an extremely good player. If someone from Arsenal asks me about the kind of player he is, he’s very similar to Mesut Ozil.”
“He’s a leftie, he plays extremely well between lines. He is more of a goal-threat than Ozil. He’s an amazing player and he will be an amazing player for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta for sure.” (Sky Sports)
Arsenal Insider’s view:
With Ozil now gone, it is extremely important for Arsenal and Arteta to find a player who would bring the kind of creativity he brought in his early years at the club.
Odegaard is a very similar player to Ozil in that respect, and as Montero said, the Norwegian offers goals as well.
Edu has had his critics during his time at Arsenal. The signing of Willian is probably his worst decision as our technical director, but if he can get Odegaard to Arsenal, he will almost certainly be back on the good side of supporters.
