Garth Crooks named Arsenal defender David Luiz in his team of the week on BBC Sport after the Brazilian starred in the win against Leicester City.
The Gunners went a goal behind very early and it looked like one of those days. We’ve been in situations like that plenty of times this season, and the outcome – more often than not – has been negative.
Thankfully, we bounced back very quickly and it was Luiz’s goal that brought us back into the game.
Crooks observed that the Brazilian looked completely uninterested before Willian took the corner. That made Leicester focus their attention elsewhere and suddenly, Luiz came to life and scored.
“You can’t tell me the move for his goal wasn’t planned. David Luiz and Willian knew exactly what they were doing.
“Luiz looked totally uninterested during the set-up with his hands on his hips watching events. His movement across the face of the six-yard box was excellent and matched only by his header – Arsenal’s equaliser.”
Arsenal Insider’s view:
Luiz really is an interesting character. His antics on the pitch can be infuriating at times, but he is a brilliant footballer and when things come off for him, they help out the team massively.
Rob Holding and Pablo Mari’s performances after Boxing Day made many people forget about the Brazilian. We all thought his time at the club was coming to an end, but it won’t be a surprise to see him get a new contract now.
Extending Luiz’s deal by another year wouldn’t be too bad an idea. He is a massive help to all the youngsters around the club, and if he can keep performing the way he did on Sunday, he can be a quality player for us when he’s called upon next season.
