Former Premier League winner Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Ben White could struggle at Arsenal this season because he doesn’t have someone experienced alongside him.
The Gunners signed the 23-year-old for £50 million from Brighton last month. White’s our third most expensive signing of all time, and all eyes will be on him every time he steps onto the pitch for Arsenal this season.
There’s absolutely no doubt in anyone’s mind that White is a fantastic defender. However, Ferdinand has raised doubts about his chances of success at Arsenal this season by claiming that he could get overexposed.
Ferdinand: Ben White could get overexposed at Arsenal
He said on Vibe with Five: “I feel that at this stage of his career, Ben White needs a partner to bring him along, like a Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane or Thiago Silva. Arsenal have needed a centre-back to come in and defend.
“Ben White will end up being a decent signing, but the biggest issue he’s got is, if I was being courted by Arsenal now, I’m thinking: ‘Who am I playing with?’

“If I’m him, I’m sitting there thinking: ‘I’m going to need some help because I’m going to be overexposed’.”
Have Edu and Arteta made a mistake?
Every manager at every club would like to have an experienced centre-half starting every week for them. Sadly, Arsenal don’t have that option this summer after we let David Luiz walk away for free at the end of his contract.
Rob Holding is our most experienced defender at the moment followed by Calum Chambers, who doesn’t even play as a centre-half anymore. Most of Pablo Mari’s experience in a top European league has come at Arsenal, while Gabriel Magalhaes, our best defender in many people’s eyes, is about the same age as White.
White and Gabriel will likely be our first-choice defensive partnership this season. On paper at least, they seem like a formidable pairing, but will Edu and Arteta’s decision to not sign an experienced campaigner come back to bite us? Only time will tell.
