'Edu can’t say these things': Ian Wright hits out at Arsenal's technical director

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has hit out at Edu Gasper for his comments on summer signing Willian’s poor start to the season, speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast.

Mikel Arteta went above and beyond to convince the Brazilian to make the move from Stamford Bridge in the summer. Willian is hugely experienced and is a proven winner in the Premier League.

Arsenal’s decision to sign him makes sense when you look at it that way, but the Willian has been poor. He is yet to score for us and he has barely created anything for his fellow attackers.

Willian has come under a lot of criticism recently. Edu jumped into his defence recently and urged supporters to give him more time to adjust to his new surroundings. (The Mirror)

That didn’t go down well with Wright. The former Arsenal striker was stunned with Edu’s defence, and he feels that our technical director should not be coming out with comments like that.

Wright: Edu’s comments disappointed me

He said: “I was very disappointed with something I read with Edu saying about Willian and needing time. I can’t have that. I’d say it to him if I saw him, we don’t really want to be peddling that. We brought Willian in to hit the ground running, and when he came in I read what you said about a player that we need immediate impact from.”

“We’ve signed Willian for three years, which was very dubious to a lot of people and even I went ‘ok’. But, I know that Willian is a serial winner and the experience that he brings and we have young players who can learn from him.”

“To hear we need to give him time, I needed something to squeeze. I’m not trying to throw him under the bus. What I’m trying to do here is explain that Edu can’t come out and say these things. Arsenal are in a position where we’ve signed a player for three years who we need to hit the ground running.”

Willian was viewed as the safe option who would come in and make an immediate difference. Sadly, that hasn’t been the case, and Arsenal fans have been urging Mikel Arteta to drop him from the starting XI.
