Former Napoli boss Gianni Di Marzio spoke to TMW about Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira and his similarities with Real Madrid and Spain legend Xabi Alonso.
Napoli were heavily linked with a move for Torreira but it seems like that Italians have admitted defeat. Gennaro Gattuso’s side are now looking at Celta’s Stanislav Lobotka but their former boss doesn’t quite approve of the move.
He said: “He (Lobotka) is a median, not the classic playmaker. He makes few goals, even if he pushes forward on every occasion. Torreira is a bit like Xabi Alonso. Torreira has ideas, he is brilliant, he shortens on the defenders, which Lobotka does not do. A playmaker we have been asking for a long time “.
Torreira couldn’t have asked for bigger praise than to be compared with one of the legends of the game. Alonso won it all in his career at club level as well as for Spain. If the Uruguayan goes on to achieve half of what Alonso has, he will end his career as a great.
Torreira secured, Xhaka next!
Napoli moving on from Torreira is a big relief for Arsenal fans. The former Sampdoria midfielder is brilliant when played in the deeper role and was one of our best players last season. Keeping hold of him saves us a lot of money and gives a lot more protection to our leaky defence.
Arsenal now have to convince Torreira’s midfield partner Granit Xhaka to stay. Hertha Berlin have reportedly agreed terms with the Swiss international over a potential move in January. (Blick)
Xhaka has been phenomenal since his return to the squad and him, in a fluid attacking system, will help Arsenal and Mikel Arteta go a long way in achieving the ambitions for this season.
