'Get that sorted': Martin Keown accuses four Arsenal players of not knowing the offside rule

Martin Keown has questioned the knowledge of Arsenal defenders after they attempted to play the offside trap from an Olympiacos goal kick last night.

The Gunners went on to lose the game 1-0 but it could’ve been so much worse. Olympiacos hitman Youssef El-Arabi scored their goal in the second half, but he could easily have opened the scoring before the break.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

The Moroccan was released behind Arsenal’s backline from a goal kick. Arsenal’s four defenders – Kieran Tierney, Gabriel Magalhaes, David Luiz and Hector Bellerin – all stepped up in what looked like a move to play El-Arabi offside.

The strange thing about that is a player cannot be offside from a goal-kick.

Keown was truly baffled by his former side’s positioning at that moment. He even questioned the defenders about their knowledge of the offside rule – especially David Luiz who put his hand up hoping to see the flag raised.

He said on BT Sport during his half-time analysis: “It was one of those strange situations. It was from a goal kick, of course there’s no offsides from a goal kick and you wonder there, do the Arsenal back four know because he just ran straight through.

“It’s a fantastic save at the end of it. This sort of position here, what you do from a goal kick is you drop to that sort of position. As much as I admire playing offside, you’re not going to get an offside from a goal kick so just drop in. David Luiz here, he’s got his arm in the air, appealing for offside.

“You’ve got to get that sorted with the staff and make sure that doesn’t happen. That’s a sloppy moment but a great save from the keeper.”

Arsenal Insider’s view:

You would think that the players playing at this level would know the basic laws of the game. Maybe this was just a momentary lapse in concentration, but that could have cost us dearly last night.

Mikel Arteta will surely have a word with his side about this after he reviews the game.

Whoever we draw next in the competition will look at that and view that as an opportunity to exploit. Arteta should make sure that his defenders are more aware of the law before they step on the pitch again this weekend.
