Former Premier League defender Micah Richards spoke on Sky Sports during their coverage of Arsenal vs Manchester City yesterday about Kieran Tierney.
The Scotsman started his first game in over a month against Manchester City yesterday. He is undoubtedly one of our best players and we genuinely struggled on the left during his absence – even though Cedric Soares played really well.
Richards admitted that he is a huge fan of Tierney. He thinks the former Celtic man is one of the best full-backs in the Premier League and labelled the £25 million we paid for him in 2019 as ‘an absolute snip’.
He said: “He’s got absolutely everything. There are full-backs nowadays that can defend and there are ones that can attack.
“Kieran Tierney, I still believe, is one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. Just because he can do both and he’s played, sometimes where Arsenal have been struggling, sometimes that’s when you see how good a player is.
“When Arsenal were struggling, he was always their best player. He came in for £25million – I think that’s an absolute snip. I watched him in Scotland and a lot of people thought he could do it at this level. He’s right up there with the top full-backs in the league.”
Arsenal Insider’s view:
There is absolutely no doubt that Tierney is one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. The Scotsman is a massive threat in attack and his defensive skills are very good as well.
He will be the first one to admit that he should’ve done better to stop Riyad Mahrez’s cross yesterday, but considering that he is only just returning from injury, we shouldn’t look too much into it.
As far as his price-tag is concerned, it is one of the best deals Arsenal have done in recent years. In a market where Ben Chilwell is going for £50 million, Tierney for half of that is an absolute bargain, especially when he is twice the player that the Chelsea man is.
