Charles Watts, the Arsenal correspondent for Goal, has had his say about Martin Odegaard’s future beyond the end of the season.
The Norwegian joined us on loan in January and has been a big hit among supporters. He has scored in each of our last two games and he is proving to be an excellent addition to Mikel Arteta’s side.
Odegaard will be a big player for us until the end of the season. There is absolutely no doubt that Arteta would love to sign him on a permanent deal, but there are many factors that could complicate a potential deal for Arsenal.
The biggest problem will be Real Madrid. Nobody knows what the Galacticos will decide in the summer, especially if Odegaard goes on to have a phenomenal end to the season at the Emirates.
Even if Real Madrid agree to sell him this summer, they are likely to demand a big fee. That could make things difficult for Arsenal who are currently in danger of missing out on European football next season.
Watts believes that Arsenal will attempt to sign Odegaard on another loan deal instead of splashing the cash this summer. However, he hasn’t ruled out a permanent deal this summer as there is a good chance that Stan Kroenke could pump some money into the club.
He said on his YouTube show: “I think probably the ideal scenario for Arsenal would probably be [to] get him back on loan for another season. If Arsenal can, I think they’ll do that.”
“I think, Odegaard, if they want to sign him permanently, is going to cost a lot of money. Whether Arsenal are going to have the money to do that, considering all the other business they need to do and other positions they need to strengthen, I’m not so sure this summer.
“I mean, I wouldn’t rule it out, because you never know what Stan Kroenke is going to do or if Arsenal are going to find money from somewhere, who they’re going to sell. It’s going to take a lot of money to get Odegaard out of Real Madrid, I think, just because of his age and his quality and what he’s showing while he’s over here.”
Arsenal Insider’s view:
Arsenal did the exact same thing with Dani Ceballos last summer. The Spaniard had a very impressive first season in England, and the Gunners convinced Real Madrid to send him back for another year.
It really wouldn’t be a surprise to see us make a similar offer this summer. It’s no surprise that Odegaard is enjoying his time here, and there is no reason why he wouldn’t want to return to play under Arteta for another year.
However, Real Madrid are in need of cash to make their own big moves. The likes of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe have been linked, and if they want to sign either one of them, they will have to sell the likes of Odegaard and Ceballos. That could play into Arsenal’s hands.
