Edu Gaspar is the main man at Arsenal at the moment. The Brazilian became our technical director in 2018, but his real test started last summer, and it is safe to say that he has done pretty well.
Arsenal signed Thomas Partey in the summer and that has been hailed by almost everyone. Edu got rid of Mesut Ozil, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi in the recently concluded transfer window, and that eased a lot of burden on our wage bill.
Willian’s signing did raise a few questions, but Edu’s recent business has brought most fans back on his side.
However, further hiccups in the near future could mean that the pressure will mount on his shoulders, and if Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen is to be believed, a former Gunners hero would love to take over from Edu.
He told Voetbal Primeur: “‘At Ajax, everything in terms of transfers ends up on the plate of director of football affairs Marc Overmars. He wants nothing more than to be the spider in the web that guards all the lines.
“It is an open secret that he does not reject a new challenge at a major foreign top club or with his former employers FC Barcelona and Arsenal.”
Arsenal Insider’s view:
Marc Overmars would be an incredible option for any club. The Dutchman has done a remarkable job at Ajax over the years, and if he fancies a change, a number of top clubs will jump in for his signature.
However, Arsenal should stick with Edu.
The Brazilian might have made a couple of mistakes, but most of his work has been stellar. There is absolutely no reason for a change at the moment, but when the time does come in the future, Overmars should certainly be considered.
