Former Southampton star Jose Fonte has had his say on rumours linking his Portugal teammate Ruben Neves with a move to Arsenal.
The Times revealed a few days ago that the Gunners are interested in signing the 24-year-old, and The Daily Mail followed that up by claiming that Neves had informed his Wolves teammates that he wants to move to the Emirates.
That excited many Arsenal supporters.
Neves has been one of Wolves’ best players since he joined them. He played a key part in helping them get promoted to the Premier League, and he has been just as impressive in the top-flight, even against the bigger sides.
Everybody knew that it was only a matter of time before Neves would join a bigger club. Despite our terrible finish in the league last term, Arsenal are an upgrade over Wolves, and Fonte has now claimed that he isn’t at all surprised about the Gunners’ interest in his compatriot.
Jose Fonte: Arsenal interest in Ruben Neves does not surprise me
He told TalkSport: “Ruben is a great, young player. We cannot forget he is still a young player. He’s done very well since he came to England.
“I can say I’m not surprised [about the links to Arsenal] because of the quality he has and his passing range is second to none. He can score goals from outside the box. He’s very clever. I’m not surprised there is interest in him.”
Arsenal are set to lose Granit Xhaka to AS Roma in the very near future and we will need a top-quality player to replace him. Neves would certainly check all the boxes, and his experience in the Premier League makes him a solid option.
The Portugal international, like Xhaka, is excellent with the ball at his feet. He can accurately ping long diagonals with his eyes closed and his shooting from distance is as good as anybody’s in the English top-flight.
If Mikel Arteta is looking for a like-for-like replacement for Xhaka, Neves is the perfect option. However, Wolves’ £40 million demand could make things a little tricky for Arsenal in the coming weeks.
